BIOGRAPHY

My artwork is based on what I've experienced. Encountering a mixture of different cultures when I first came to America, I gained new perspectives about everyday life, as well as a broader sense of global views and traditions. When I approach my artwork, I want to create something that is not defined by any social norms. I search for ways that can enable more people to interact with my work. To achieve this goal, I tend to avoid having a specific concept in mind while creating a painting. How viewers perceive each painting is therefore left up to his or her own interpretation of the piece. During the process of transforming what is on the canvas, one thing I seek to do is provide visual stimulation through abstract forms, with the aim of encouraging multiple emotions.

I use a variety of materials to create my art, often mixing items that are related to my life and surroundings directly into the paint. This use of materials is a part of a personal touch, one which I hope evokes an unexpected feeling of astonishment, or even shock from the viewer. Materials differ with each painting. There are many items I come upon by chance, and when I see the shape and feel texture of a particular item, I then decide how I want to incorporate it into my artwork. I paint organic forms, (frequently/at times) using a style similar to an action painting with lines and colors influenced by Japanese artwork from the Edo period. While producing a new piece I work patiently, creating layers that will demonstrate my technical skills and convey my understanding of painting.

In terms of color, I work across the entire range. However, I do have a tendency to go from one spectrum to the other, often using a darker, more subdued palette for a painting of a series of paintings, and then shifting to a brighter, much more vivid palette. I am always trying to find new balances and effects with use of color. Over the years I have also used an increasingly wide array of shapes and textures. It is important to me, as part of my character and as an artist, to be experimental, always open, with (no/few) boundaries. This is reflected in my style, which tends to display varied amorphous shapes; though in contrast can be (markedly/strongly) delineated; while at other times is more representative of forces in color, explosive or flowing, for example. Although I employ method and practice, I also paint intuitively, allowing emotions to infuse the work: the good, the bad, the ugly, the known, the unknown, and the beautiful. For me, (more often than not,) painting is a process of self-discovery.

When I present my work, I group the paintings together according to light and dark colors. I aspire for my paintings to be interactive with the viewer, so that their perceptions change as they move around the piece. Since my process is one of self-discovery, my hopes are that viewer can share in this as well. Therefore, depending on how one feels, or the environment, a different analytical or emotional response may be elicited, even on the subconscious level. As an artist, I want to inspire others and be inspired. As I move forward I want to explore new fields, and continue evolving in my ability to express personal conditions of what it means to be human, using an honesty, which also makes these expressions relatable to others, and can in turn positively cultivate (enrich) (their own) awareness.
